Joining forces to prevent criminals from creating false identity documents.
Enter Project Genesius - a simple but effective project to help printer manufacturers figure out:
How well do you know your customers?
Do you know what they are making using your technology, equipment, supplies or even advice?
Who do you inform if you are worried about orders for your goods that don’t add up or ring alarm bells?
Project Genesius has been set up by the Metropolitan Police to help answer these questions.
And HID Global is working with the major manufacturers of thermal card printers, embossers and many companies that supply the consumables for them, to raise awareness of just how easy it is for criminals to obtain the equipment needed to create thousands of fake identity documents.
We offer advice on how to recognise a suspicious order, what to do if you receive one, and how to protect your company from being used by criminals to obtain the supplies they need.
You can prevent many such orders by signing up with the project (all completely free of charge) and using the Metropolitan Police’s specially designed logo on your company website and the part of the effort to deter criminal activity.
We are requesting companies in the printer industry to come on board with this project in order to make it harder for criminals to ply their trade. Project Genesius is not just for London - we liaise with police forces all over the UK, within Europe and across the world.
All companies supplying equipment, products or know-how that could be used in any part of the process of making false identity documents (including passports, national ID cards, or credit type cards) are encouraged to contact us for further details and join HID in the fight against ID fraud.

Colleges and universities are leading the way with multiple-use contactless ID cards that contain several applications
and the broader community could learn a lot from them.
Higher education institutions are leveraging HID Global contactless technology to produce campus ID cards that perform multiple functions for students, faculty and administration, including:
• Physical access to classrooms, labs, offices, residence halls and recreational facilities
• Logical access to workstations, networks and information
• Identification for library checkout, transportation and other services
• Cashless transactions for food service, vending machines and laundry
• Debit card transactions in partnership with financial institutions
Using the college campus as a paradigm, other communities - including cities, corporations, and government entities - could benefit from converging applications via multi-use smart cards.
Converged contactless payment systems have the potential to revolutionize the way people access and pay for a growing range of products and services. A single smart card could provide a customer or employee access to transportation, parking, facilities, vending and debit card transactions. The results could include smoother flows of people and vehicles, shorter queues, and faster, more intuitive transactions.
However, achieving the full potential of smart card technology requires cooperation between multiple entities on key operational matters - which is not a simple proposition. Transit authorities, banks, credit card companies and retailers who wish to engage in a partnership can struggle with agreements on technology choices, rules for payment schemes, administration and costs. The complexity and difficulty of a mutually beneficial solution is a primary obstacle to converging multiple services and physical access in a single card.
Still, when you look beyond the challenges, the fact remains that there are some great business reasons for companies and organizations to seek out partnerships. For example, a bank that partners with a transit authority to make purchasing a metro ticket as easy as carrying an ATM card, has the opportunity to reinforce its brand to transit customers on a constant basis. The end result: The metro rider places the bank’s ATM card at “top of wallet.” With a single card always at her fingertips, that card becomes the logical choice for all daily transactions and the first choice when discretionary purchases arise.
Just as modern college IDs delineate students and faculty as loyal, active members of their campus communities, multi-use smart cards can define loyal, active members of their respective business and municipal communities. Consumers win through streamlined access to services they use every day, and businesses gain customer loyalty and a greater share of each customer’s spending.

Through my position, I meet with architects and designers every week, and it’s clear that they, and their clients (building owners and facilities managers), are eager to find green and energy-efficient solutions for their new and existing buildings. With energy costs escalating, there is an increasing awareness of their responsibilities to regulate their buildings’ energy consumption. In addition, changes in building codes across the US are mandating higher levels of energy efficiency, and municipalities are rewarding sustainable design and construction practices.
More often than not, the focus for energy efficiency is on a building’s heating, and air conditioning or electrical systems - the systems that regulate heat loss or gain. HID Global offers access to control solutions that provide users with physical access to the building and logical access to their computer. These solutions can also be connected to facility management systems to control ventilation, lighting, heating and other controls based on the profiles of the employees and/or how many people are in the building, and manage these controls accordingly.
And not to be overlooked is the building envelope - a building’s roofs, facades, foundation and fenestration, including doors - which is also critical to a building’s energy efficiency.
There’s absolutely no doubt that air infiltration or leakage through door openings can negatively impact a building’s energy performance and indoor environmental quality. If you think about the number of exterior doors in a high-rise commercial office building, you can begin to imagine the true impact that exterior door opening solutions can have on a building’s energy efficiency.

PEMKO makes gasketing and weather stripping and thermally broken thresholds. NORTON introduced the Trinity closer, an off-the-grid closer with a built-in generator that consistently and predictably self-adjusts to ensure door closure. Our wood door companies, MAIMAN and GRAHAM, are making beautiful, FSC and Chain of Custody certified wooden doors with rapidly renewable veneers, agrifiber and recycled cores. Many of the products made by our hardware companies contain high percentages of recycled materials, low-emitting materials and can contribute to the LEED rating of a building. Installed in exterior door openings in combination, these products can mitigate heat loss or gain through the building envelope and will substantially improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of a building.
Currently, the LEED® Green Building Rating System only recommends that some form of Building Envelope Commissioning be performed during construction. There is a requirement, however, for buildings to undergo Fundamental Building Commissioning for systems in order to achieve LEED® certification. Building Envelope Commissioning will, among other things, identify areas of concern related to air infiltration and leakage through door openings that would negatively impact a building's energy performance and indoor environmental air quality.
I truly believe that sustainable and energy-efficient door opening solutions will be one of the trends that will greatly affect our industry as we move forward. To meet this challenge we not only provide the solutions I mentioned here but the ASSA ABLOY Group is continuously seeking to improve its processes. From sourcing to recycling, sustainability initiatives are based on an ongoing risk analysis as well as on our Code of Conduct, involving both internal and external stakeholders.

We’ve all read that threats of terrorism and economic uncertainty have negatively impacted the travel industry.
As Sales Director, I spend a fair amount of time passing through airports. As anyone who shares my travel schedule can attest, there seems to be no shortage of humanity funneling through airports.
According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) international tourist arrivals for business, leisure and other purposes are estimated to have declined worldwide by 4 percent last year. However, that still reflects a total of 880 million tourist arrivals annually worldwide. That’s over 100,000 people every hour; twenty-eight people each second.
The reality is we live in the age of a global economy, in a world where barriers continue to fall. People must continue to travel - for business, for leisure, to connect with friends and family - and they have a right to travel that is safe, efficient and convenient.
That’s why I’m excited by the growth of second-generation e-passports. The enhanced e-passport chip securely stores the holder’s personal data and biometrics - including photograph, fingerprint or iris - which is accessed through secure contactless technology.
Millions of electronic passports are already in circulation, and all major airports have initiatives to establish an e-border control infrastructure throughout 2010. In the words of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO): “This represents a first step in bringing global state travel document systems and technologies more in line with 21st century border control, facilitation and security objectives.” This trend will inevitably spur improvements in functionality and encourage the integration of ever more sophisticated security features.
Second-generation e-passports translate directly into increased efficiency and convenience for governments and their citizens, with secure contactless technology helping to make passport-based identity checks simpler, faster and more secure. The convenience of easier traveler processing at border crossing points is an obvious attraction of the RFID-enabled e-passport technology. And its greatest benefit is the role it will play in the next decade to safeguard against terrorism, illegal immigration and identity theft - the most pressing national security threats of our time.
Closer to home, with the global adoption of e-passports, perhaps all of us can spend less time in airports, and more time at our ultimate destinations.
